The Moon Witch

Been quite a while since I posted anything. Recently, I've been getting around to fleshing out some mythology and folklore for the Soltecs because, well, those things are awesome.

-The Moon Witch-

There is a saying used by a number of Soltecian parents to coerce cooperation from a misbehaving child: "Be good or the Moon Witch will steal you away." The being mentioned in this phrase traces her mythical roots throughout Soltec civilization to its origins.

Legend goes that the Moon Witch was a sorceress of untold power and secrets. She lived out in the inhospitable wilds beyond Soltec's safe zones. Mentioned through out a number of tales, her abilities vary widely (depending on one's version or interpretation): conjuring storms, telling fortunes, summoning and communing with spirits, traveling within a swarm of locusts, but the one common trait all versions seem to share is her affinity to devour the soul of some unfortunate victim. Later tales featuring the Moon Witch have her being slain by the mythic Irken hero, Akrillos. This is most likely an addition by Irken scholars rather than traditional sources.

Legend mingles with history as many scholars tie the beginnings of the myth with the historical case of Soltec's first Lunar High Priestess, Leisha Uyt Maykida, who had vanished without a trace shortly into her career.

Despite the fear she may have invoked, it was not uncommon for individuals to petition her spirit for favors or to ask revenge against some enemy. It is said that she had a great taste for Joteso (A sweet, herbal drink popular in ancient Soltec), and offering her a bowl is a sure fire way of gaining her attention.
Also strange is that new mothers will often invoke her name in order to protect their newborns from evils and demons. Reasons as to why have been lost to time.
